Members LMullins Posted December 23, 2024 Members Report Posted December 23, 2024 Hey Folks, I've been making quite a bit of wet-formed holsters recently and a customer had requested a glossier finish than my typical Tan-Kote... I've never done a shinier project, but I do have the Fiebing's Leather Balm. I've had great results at getting a good luster and color depth with the Leather Balm but there's one thing I'm wondering; Is it a conditioner, wax, or topcoat? I typically use Neatsfoot oil followed by Tan-Kote, can I do the same with the Leather Balm? it gives off a good shine and water repellence, but is this a topcoat on the same terms as Resolene and Tan-Kote? thanks for your time :) Quote
Members TomG Posted December 24, 2024 Members Report Posted December 24, 2024 I don't use Tan-Kote, but I've used LB/AW for 15 years. I primarily make dog collars and leashes. I apply it liberally, front and back. I give it a couple of minutes to set and then pull the item over a round, wood rod, front and back, while keeping tension. This breaks the fibers from getting stiff with the dip dye process. Then, a good buffing and I'm done. I have used Resolene and still do periodically. I found that if you don't dilute it 50/50 with water, it can crack. Even diluted, I've seen it do that. Quote
