Members Baseballguy Posted February 5 Members Report Posted February 5 I do baseball glove restoration and often have to replace the binding leather. The binding leather needs to be about 1-1/2 to 2 oz. I have a very hard time finding the right leather in the right weight. I can get the right leather but I do not have the equipment to efficiently and reliably cut it down to that thickness. The material is approximately 1-1/2 to 2” wide. I wanted to see if there is anyone that can split it down to that thickness in the Houston area. Quote
Members Digit Posted February 6 Members Report Posted February 6 What is 'the right leather'? As for thickness, 1.5-2 oz converts to .6-.8 mm. I've ordered two half-hides of .7-.9 mm chrome tan horse nappa last month. So that thickness is certainly obtainable, at least here in Europe. Note that horse nappa is sturdier and less stretchy than sheep or lamb. When I bought my cheap Chinese manual splitter off of AliExpress I tested splitting down both a piece of 3.5mm (8-9 oz) veg tan harness leather and that horse nappa. As long as the blade is razor sharp both worked a treat. Quote
