My wife gave me a dvd for christmas that I really enjoyed it is called Building with awareness the construction of a hybrid house. Fully self contained, makes its own electricity, rainwater catchment and passive eco stuff throughout. We plan on building a house to retire in, outside of tuscon az. grow a few grapes and raise our rescue dogs. It is a small enough house that people will visit but not stay forever ( read Kids LOL) and this is an idea for self reliance I and my wife have been kicking around for years, going off grid and such. Well worth a watch if you are interested in this kind of stuff.
