Members megabit Posted February 5, 2009 Members Report Posted February 5, 2009 Here is the 1st of 2 handles I am making for a friend. 6 plait with pineapple ends. He is going to use them for a poker chip case he is building. Keeping the strings from turning over is certainly a challenge, practice should help. Quote
Members Raven Posted February 5, 2009 Members Report Posted February 5, 2009 Nice! I hope to be able to do braids that good soon Quote Wassail! Raven
Members entiendo Posted February 6, 2009 Members Report Posted February 6, 2009 Wow, you're starting with the tough stuff and it looks really nice. I've heard rawhide is very difficult to work with. Quote
Members rawhide1 Posted February 6, 2009 Members Report Posted February 6, 2009 megabit Looking good!! Keep after it as you said practice and more practice. Mike Quote

I've heard rawhide is very difficult to work with. The hardest part of using rawhide is cutting the string. Man have I wasted a bunch of hide. :D I play with paracord a lot to learn the knots so that I am not trying to learn the knot at the same time I am dealing with the hide. Thanks for the kind words everyone. Tied another of the pineapples tonight just one more left. Quote
Members entiendo Posted February 6, 2009 Members Report Posted February 6, 2009 What makes it so difficult to cut the string? Just wondering. I have actually thought about playing with rawhide but I was going to buy it already laced and just bevel it myself, but then again I can't keep my hands off my kangaroo. Quote

I have one of those cheap crafttool lace maker that takes some practice to get to work. That and getting the right amount of moisture into the hide. To little moisture and it is like cutting steel, to much and it gets spongy and doesn't cut well at all. Quote
Members ct701996 Posted February 6, 2009 Members Report Posted February 6, 2009 Hey that is some pretty good work. If you want a good lace cutter get Bruce grants book how to make cowboy and horse gear it tells you how to make a couple neat cutters and things Quote Bill
Members millwright Posted February 25, 2009 Members Report Posted February 25, 2009 Your braids and knots look good to me. I just started trying to learn some knots and braids myself. Still in the paracord and twine stage. Hope to do some nice work like you've done here before long. Nice, practical, and pleasing to the eye. Quote
Members rawhider Posted February 25, 2009 Members Report Posted February 25, 2009 Looks good, MB. The 6 plait is a little hard to get the hang of. Your knots look really good. Working with rawhide is kind of like working with concrete: once it's ready, get your work done quick! Quote
