I'm casting my vote for a TOOLERS category!

Leave it to hidepounder to pick something he can kick a** in!! :yeah:

That is a good call though.

But since the prizes are very nice and there's a lot of money at stake there needs to be a lot of interest. It could be considered though. And could we get a sponsor for this category?

What do you (or anyone) have in mind as far as what to tool?

It would be hard to judge a spur strap vs. a suit case or a wallet vs. a table top.

Should everyone do the same item- say a photo album cover- or be able to do whatever?

We just want to make it fair for everyone who enters. :whatdoyouthink:

Like I said before we will probably add more categories next year, I just don't know which ones yet.

If it was just a tooling catagory, you could send out the same tooling pattern to everybody that is interested and have them tool it on a specific size and weight of leather. it wouldnt have to be an entire project, as that would probably fall into another catagory anyway.

Just a thought it might be way off of what you guys are doing.

But this is just what I want, good ideas. And that would be something to consider. If we can get enough input from enough people we will get it worked out.

Keep 'em coming!

Casey,

I hadn't given this subject any thought before I jumped in (IMAGINE THAT!) I guess what I was thinking of was a category that non-saddle makers could enter. It should have to be a finished project that falls within a general category. Maybe a category similar to some used by LC&SJ? Maybe I should quit whining and just learn to make saddles.... :whatdoyouthink:

I was kinda thinking along the same lines. Maybe a saddle accrutment category?

We need something with enough tooling to show their skills off.

Here's one you might like - rope cans & rope bags! Just an idea.

I'll keep thinking. Any more suggestions?? Anyone??

In addtion to the rope cans and rope bags, you could also add saddle bags, eny type of book/binder cover, brief cases, placks, various home furnishing items like lamp shades or ect....

Enything that is ruffly that size and takes a fare amount of construction. It would be their choice to make a lamp shade out of light skirting leather verses say a book cover or rope bag that was more involved. Just as long as the majority of the items in the category have about the amount of tooling then it should be alright. i dont know how your guys system works but just ideas.

I would be neet to see what everyone who enters comes up with. Ecspecialy you Bob. I realy like your style and always look forward to seeing your next masterpeice.

Jed,

Thanks for your input.

So basicly what you are saying is a square inch or square foot minimum or maximum.

Not bad.

You could say for example, it has to be up to two square foot tooled. And let them pick what they want to make. Could have some interesting entries!

Good suggestion!

Ya... i wouldn't concrete nothing to specific on the sqared inch of tooling but give a general estimation of how big the item should size wise for the class. Otherwise, by the time you add up the front and back of say a good sized rope "bag", it would probly total to be twice as much tooling as the front of the peice of a simple rope "can", even though they are about the same in size. The square feet/inch of tooling should be somthing highly considerd but maybe not as inforced as the general size of the item.(lots of "sizes" and "toolings" in there but hope it makes sence)

Jed,

I think I understand what you are saying.

If we do have a tooled category we will try to make it as simple and easy to understand as possible.

We tried to keep the rules to a minimum to make it easy for everyone. We tried to make it "Maker friendly". After all that is who the contest is for.

Like I tell the new makers - win, lose or draw you sure get a lot of exposure from being in the contest.

Thanks again for your input!

We still have some spots open in all categories. It's coming up quick!

Must not be any boot makers on this website! Have not heard from one on here.
