Dying Tanned Deerhides

Hey Gang-

I have a few deerhides that were tanned white (older, and starting to grey). I'm looking to re-dye them black. I've messed around with some scraps and USMC Black dye, and have gotten mixed results. Aside from totally submersing the leather in dye, has anyone re-dyed previously tanned deerhides? If so, what worked best and what were your results.

Vinegaroon bath would be my best suggestion...after TESTING.

hello there , another way to go is try a strong solution of RIT DYE OR A SIMILAR PRODUCT.

I thought of that but was afaid that the color will run if it gets wet. Also wasn't sure about setting the dye with vinegar on leather.

YOU WILL HAVE TO SET THE DYE WITH A MORDANT AND RINSE WELL. I DO KNOW DEER SKIN

THAT HAVE BEEN DYED WITH BROWN TURNED OUT GREAT. NOT SURE OF BLACK..

Thanks for the advice, I'll test a piece tonight and let ya know how it turned out.
