Horse Hair

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I have trawled the internet and found a few places to buy horse hair, and horse hair in colours, so before I buy blind does anybody have a place they use and get good service from?

Thanks in advance for your reccomendations....

I've bought small hanks from Hitchin Post Supply in Washington state. Customer service is a bit lacking but their products are always good.

I've used Hitching Post Supply too and been very happy.

By "in colours" do you mean dyed? Because of course horsehair already *does* come in colors - sorrel, black, grey etc. If you want to dye it, acid dyes should work well as they are formulated to work on protein fibers. (I know it sounds bad but the acid is acetic acid, or you can also use vinegar - it's not a horrible acid.) If you just get white you can dye it any color you like, and it might or might not be more cost-effecitve for you to do your own dyeing, just depends on your situation.

I don't dye it myself. I just use the normal colors it comes in.

I use Hitching Post Supply, too. I have bought some colors from them, but mostly dye my own using Rit Dye, if I want something other than white, black or sorrel. Are you doing hitching? Chris

Interesting, I was wondering what type of dye you would use for horse hair :)

You mite want to look at Wagman Primus (www.wagmanprimus.com). I've always had good service from them and thay sell 1/4 lb hanks of dyed hair in 27". Have used Hitching Post in past and always had good service from them also but Wagmans are a little cheeper. Rit dye is all I've ever used for dyeing, like the way it looks. Have seen other types of dye that make the hair to shiny/plastic looking. Almost all types of dye will fade with time and the red and blue are real bad about bleeding into surounding hair. I've always liked useing natural colers the best also. Just my 2 cents worth Ken
