Members GypsyWind Posted May 14, 2009 Members Report Posted May 14, 2009 So I just started making my first leather masks this last week and have now started to paint them, and have one finished, but I have been useing Acrylic paints (only thing available to me at the moment) Has anyone had experience with this? is there some kind of spray-on enemal coating so that the acrylic doesnt get old and flake and break apart. Would love any input on what to change about the masks as well! Thank you everyone for being so helpful on here! Quote

I use Super Shene spray -- have several projects that see fairly heavy use, and have never had an issue. Quote
Ambassador leatheroo Posted May 14, 2009 Ambassador Report Posted May 14, 2009 hi gypsy, you have made a good start on your mask making...i saw your other post but i thought i would comment here. You might like to check out the tutorial i did on how i make my masks..you will find it here http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=2380 I think you will improve by using thinner leather, it is easier to work with and you can do more with it. i use veg tanned calf skin ...1mm or 2mm thick. To get a good paint job an airbrush is the only way to go, there have been lots of posts about which airbrush to get so i wont get into that here. As for paint, i just airbrush with good quality acrylics and just use a spray can of sealer over the top..sealer can be bought at craft stores. There is a link to my gallery on my members page that will give you an idea of the coloring that can be achieved. Hope to see more of your work soon caroline Quote

I just woke up from a migrane and forgot that I had posted last night already Thank you for your reply and information, I think that going with a thinner leather will definitly help, Im having to skiv it down quite a bit to get it to hold shape. The next Hide im going to use is about 1mm thinner then the last, so hopefully that will help as well. Im going to head to the art store tomarrow to take a look at the differnt spray sealers that they have. As far as airbrushing goes, Im dieing to get one, but dont think that I can afford it anytime soon, the cheepest iv seen is like $300-$500 for starting kits, which is still a bit out of my price range, Thank you for the link too, Ill definitly go and read through it! I cant wait to make some more =) Quote
