My dad was a Marine and we were talking about leatherworking, and he mentioned he had never seen the leather collar Marines were issued that earned them the name Leathernecks.

I would love to make him one a s a surprise does anyone have any photos of one, or ever seen one??

Thanks in advance,

Eric

Interesting idea. Cant help ya much maybe there are some ex marines around that know a little history.

That first color the last word looks like "Death" and maybe "OF DEATH" but not sure about the other side of it.

What is the reason for the leather collar and when was it adopted?

Tony.

It was used back in the days of the sabers, late 1800's as a defense from having your jugalur cut open. It also from what I read made sure that marines kept there heads high (no slouching) when in ranks.

I think it says "valley of death" but I cant be 100% sure. I looked for a while and cant seem to find any reference with pictures or direct comments. Maybe a quick call to a museum monday will answer your question.
