Embroidering leather for motorcycle patches

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone

I wondered if someone would be able to give me some info. I know someone that would like to get patches for a motorcyle jacket. He'd like the patch background to be leather so I imagine that to be some type of garment leather. Can anyone make any recommendations for this. It will be machine embroidered, the kind you use a computer with and it does the design for you. Thanks for your help,

Tiny

IF the machine can go through thicker leather it'd look very nice to have a sewing channel following the contours of the patch and use a matching thread color to sew it on the jacket with.

Just an idea.

I don't know anything about it, but we have it done all the time on chap leather 4/5 oz. The leather just has to be big enough they can get it on a hoop.

Bad idea methinks. Think about the leather substrate compared to a fabric substrate. The needle comes down and parts the warp and woof of the fabric. The fabric is unharmed by this action. The patch has a firm solid base. With leather every single time the needle comes down it puts a hole in the leather. It perforates it and each stitch weakens the leather. If you embroider the patch on a leather substrate the the patch is sitting on a piece of leather that looks like it was the backstop for the Battle of the Ardennes Forest with zillions of holes.

I would use fabric as the substrate and maybe stitch a leather "background" under the completed patch to give the illusion that the background is leather. You get most of what he wants with a MUCH stronger patch.

Thanks Bree for the info. My friend knows someone that got it done but he's being tight-lipped about how and where. I guess I should be more specific too. It would be just 4 initials in a vertical fashion. I guess another alternative would be to get the letters made as regular patches, attach to the leather shape then attach to the vest. Whew, that's a workout! But I guess that's a viable option. Thanks again!

You use rounded needles for leather - My wife has an embroidery company and can assist with anything

you may need. Please PM me if you want to contact her.

She can digitize the design and embroidery it also.

But yeah emdroidering leather is not a big deal in general.
