"slow-um-down' wheel" Question

Recommended Posts

On a 618 or 1541 type machine w/servo, is the machine belt better on the small or middle pulley of speed reducer (alias "slow-um-down' wheel" for our UK friends) ? Not for speed reduuction sake but for torque on this size machine. Is the small one too much or just right torque?

Thanks,

Regis

Hi Regis, hope all is well. The belt from the handwheel of the sewing machine goes on the smallest pulley on the speed reducer. The belt from the motor goes on the largest pulley on the speed reducer. The reason that the middle pulley on the speed reducer is not used anymore, is in the old days, (before servo motors, when all there was, was clutch motors), the only way to change speeds, was to use the middle pulley, but that meant changing to a larger belt as well. With servo motors, since the speed is adjustable, it eliminated the middle pulley. Lets face it, it's much easier to turn a dial, or push a up/down arrow, than it is to change the belt. Hope this helps, Steve

Thanks Steve. I knew it is that way on the larger machines but thought torque might be an issue on smaller ones.

Thank you,

Regis
