I just wanted to let everyone who was thinking about dabbling with the Vinagroon (alternate Black dye) to wear gloves. I finished a project today and figured since it was just made from Vinegar and rust I would not need gloves (sadly mistaken) and now may fingers and thumbs have a dirty grey color to them that won't wash off.

Please don't assume like I did - wear gloves when working with this stuff - it is still a dye.

All I can say is that's strange - I've been using it a very long time and never had that happen......not to say one shouldn't wear gloves but my assumption is apparently it reacted with something else either on the skin or ? and that's what caused the coloring....

Despite your problem it's still technically not a stain but a chemical reagent meaning that it must react with something else to generate the color - in the case of wood or leather it's the tannins......

I haven't had my fingers discolored either when using vinegaroon. My unfinished wood desk however has lots of little grey spots on it though. The other day I made black leather buttons for my jacket and I decided not to neutralize them using baking soda. I wanted them harden up and they did. So far so good. We will see what happens the first time I wash it.

My VG solution is made of steel wool and rice vinegar.

Just a "far-out" thought. Were you wearing jewelry - watch or ring??

I wear gloves when working with vinegaroon, but really only because I don't like the smell of it on my hands. I've never had my skin discolor from it, though. Very odd...

I had this happen to me too. I used bleach and course salt to scrub most of it off. The concrete in my garage is also still stained by it. I will use gloves the next time I use it.
