deer hide

My mom mentioned to me tonight that their neighbors (a very rural area) are dumping deer carcasses by the property line. I almost cried at the thought of the wasted hides. All right, I can understand enjoying venison, but why toss a perfectly good hide???? Can anything be done? If so, what?

there is a lot of work in tanning a deer hide. so ... you can buy a tanned hide

cheaper than you can tan it yourself

I thought about calling up a local teen I met at our farmers' market who wanted to get into buckskinning and telling him about it.

If you were closer I'd say let us have it and we will use it to make lace for stitching our trees (if it isn't starting to rot). We are needing more lace and our hunting friends don't seem to be getting too many deer this year for some reason. It isn't good for braiding (too stretchy), but it is great as sewing lace.

If it's cold enough they froze the first night out they could be thawed, salted, rolled and sent to a tannery. If the varmints or somebodys dog didn't get to them, or they're all full of butcher cuts and bullet holes that will all turn into giant gaping holes when they hit the tanning solutions. On second thought just take Lukes advice and buy some.

I have offered this in the past to someone else here...

I have a video set on how to skin a deer, and on how to tan a hide into buckskin, there may even be the rawhide element too. As well it has ways to make primitive bows and tools and such. The trouble is my dvd burner died. The usb thumbdrives are to much for me to buy in order to ship them for the size needed.

If tehre is a way to send this video to you I will. It took digging but I found them free online in torrents...
