ams1114 Report post Posted December 18, 2009 I want to begin buying supplies to start making leather bracelets. I need some advice on what kind of leather to work with..I was on a leather site and I am not sure what is strong enough or best to work with. I want to stamp phrases into the leather and detail the ends with roap and beading. If anyone can give me any advice such as sites to buy the leather as well as the tools I would greatly appreciate it!! Just a beginner with an idea
NoahL Report post Posted December 18, 2009 If you Google these places, you will get their websites (also, you can find some at the top of the page on these forums): Tandy Leather Factory, Springfield Leather, Hidecrafters, Zack White Leather, Waterhouse Leather, Siegel of California Any of those places will provide the leather you want. Since you want to stamp it, you will want vegtan (vegetable tanned) leather, which you would be able to dampen and then stamp, and dye whatever color you wish. As for thickness, that depends on preference for bracelets--I like thick ones, and make them out of 7-9oz leather, but you could probably use leather half that thick and still be fine. ~Noah

NoahL Report post Posted December 18, 2009 Thanks so much for your suggestions!! Where would i find indivdual stamps to do different phrasing? Also what other tools will I need? I am planning on putting round metal clasps on the end. Many of the places I listed will have a Tools section on their websites (at the very least, I know that Tandy Leather Factory and Zack White Leather do) and you will want to look for alphabet stamps, which will let you stamp each letter individually. As far as what other tools you need, that depends on what you want to do. If you want to sew the leather, you will probably want a stitching groover and overstitch wheel, as well as an awl to make holes to put the needles through. If you want to tool the leather, that is something I don' t really do, but Tandy has a set of 7 basic tools for that. As far as the metal clasps, that depends on what kind of clasps--can you put up a picture of the kind of thing you are thinking of using? ~Noah
