Chap reinforced zipper

I have noticed in several places where people state that they reinforce the chap zipper with leather. Anyone have an opinion on how to do this?

My motorcycle chaps have a snapped flap at the bottom of the leg, I assume it is to help keep the zipper from coming unzipped, thereby reinforcing the zipper...
