Moderator Art Posted March 10, 2010 Moderator Report Posted March 10, 2010 Hi Ray, I'm pretty sure it is a carrot peeler. Moderator bruce johnson Posted March 10, 2010 Moderator Report Posted March 10, 2010 Paul Krause will know for sure. I am thinking it is a variation of a Star welt knife. That is what I have seen it called when I was going through a boot shop a while back. Quote

Contributing Member UKRay Posted March 10, 2010 Author Contributing Member Report Posted March 10, 2010 The tool is a circular welt cutter. ( Dictionary of leatherworking tools, by R.A Salaman) / Knut Looks just like a carrot peeler to me too, Art! Thanks Knut - now, what exactly might a guy do with a circular welt cutter 'cos, to the best of my knowledge, I have never met a circular welt!? (Keep it clean!) Ray Quote
Members celticleather Posted March 11, 2010 Members Report Posted March 11, 2010 Ray It's a channel cutter - used for making a 45-degree channel in the bottom of a leather sole. The outsole stitching is then placed in the bottom of the channel, and the flap is glued and hammered back in place (see pic). The cut should be almost invisible when the sole is finished. I had one for many years, but it disappeared a few years ago. I'd hoped it would turn up when we moved the shop last year, but no such luck! Woodware Repetitions (Hale & Co in US) have them for sale . . . eBay number 280414713984. Terry Quote
