Members rookie Posted April 13, 2008 Members Report Posted April 13, 2008 Hey everyone, I have a friend ask me to make a guitar strap for him. I have never made one, I am in need for a template or a little guidance. I have made holsters, spur straps, belts and purse, but this one has me at a loss. Can anyone help? Thanks. Quote
Members Torquewrench Posted April 13, 2008 Members Report Posted April 13, 2008 Your friend probably has a strap now. Take it and on a large sheet of paper draw out your own pattern. Ask him what he liks or dislikes, do dimensions need changed? Your first one may now be the best final design, but that makes a good start. I just finished a couple of camea straps and the next ones will be changed as some of the dimensions are not quite right. Now I have a reason to buy more leather!! I always make the first of anything out of a lower grade leather so if it gets filed in the trash it dosen't hurt the wallet as bad. Hopes this helps you get started. You can also make a paper mock up to check dimensions. Quote

Members strapt Posted April 18, 2008 Members Report Posted April 18, 2008 Hey Rookie, I have made several guitar straps for musician friends and family members. I just made my own patterns with some poster board and a couple basic drafting tools. I still haven't sorted out how to work our digital camera or I would post a couple pics. But it really was one of the easier templates I've created. And easier still if you happen to know the length the strap needs to be, and can cut it all out of one piece. - No buckles or weaving parts together... I would recommend buying a pre-cut strap from Tandy if this is a one off project. Or investing in a strap cutter if you haven't gotten one already. I made my first few straps w/o a strap cutter and really had a hard time cutting 2 edges parallel and straight. Let us know how it progresses. Quote
