Hello From Wa State

Recommended Posts

Hello from the Pacific Northwest where it's not raining now, but if you hang on for just a minute or two, it will be.

I'm a newbie to leatherworking and though I suck at it, I am very enthusiastic. I have stabbed myself with a fid only once, though I anticipate many more injuries and purchased a jumbo box of band-aids.

Actually, I'm pretty handy and when I'm not finishing our strawbale house for occupancy permit, I braid leather for fun in the evenings while listening to TV. I don't watch TV while braiding as that has lead to tears and recriminations. But TV is not why I accidentally stabbed myself. I do not hold TV responsibile for my own stupidity and the stabbing was just poor technique on my part.

Luckily, the stabbiness wasn't too terrible and my technique has gotten better since then.

Anyway, I have found a lot of interesting stuff on this site and hope at some point to be able to participate in some discussions in a meaningful, non-stabbing manner. However, if I post anything in the Gallery, it will be only evidence of just how crappy I am at this. But I figure if I keep trying I will be less crappy tomorrow than I am today, though there are no guarantees, and so, until I have something cogent or at least somewhat entertaining to say, I will lurk and learn.

Thanks and we now return you to your regularly scheduled programming.

Welcome to the forum. I also am up here in the great Norwet. Every starts out at some stage of "needing improvement" ecspecially when you start comparing your work to people that have been doing it for 20 or 40 yrs or more. This site if you read alot will help progress your work very quickly though and before you know it you will be turning out very much improved projects in no time. Enjoy.

H.T., keep in mind you're probably your own worst critic (we all are), and I doubt your work is as "crappy" as you may think. Regardless, it'll take time to reach a level of satisfaction with your work... I think it took me about three or four years of continual improvement before I was producing items I liked. Much of that time was spent figuring out which materials and techniques worked best for me.

Stick with it, and post some pics when ready! -Alex wave.gif

I appreciate the sentiment, but trust me, I know crappy when I see it.

OTOH, compared with my first efforts, my current project is 2% less crappy and 100% less stabby.

I am for less stabbiness.
