I haven't made anything for myself in a long time. Three years ago I made a wallet, but everything else has left either as gift or as product. Now I am back in school, so I am hoping to get some use out of this little guy. It is a cover for composition books. Please forgive the odd colors, I'm not very good with a camera. Day 1, half the outline done.

A little more progress made today. I am really enjoying this piece, even though I am not too fond of my mistakes. I would love any tips for next time, please.

Great stuff! I love the tri-weave spine, very creative.

Thank you Timd! I would love to take credit for the spine idea but I got that from Tomswede.

Well, I finished carving and tooling. I dyed it using Timber Brown using Tandy's eco flow dye with an airbrush. I know the picture looks like it has splotches, but it doesn't. I'm no photographer and I had some shadows. I am very satisfied with the results so far. Next is laying down the color with cova's through an airbrush and some fine brush work. I would really like any advice on how to get a conditioner or oil in before I put down the satin shene and antique. Happy tooling all and I hope you like what I'm doing.

I see you are using a hollow ground blade with a unique angle to it. Is this something you have done yourself? What swivel knife do you use?

I'm using an ABS swivel knife from Tandy. A lot of it was carved with a 3/8" hollow ground, some with a standard 1/4" angle blade, and the rest with an old 3/8" straight I found at a garage sale and restored.

Finished the art work, all there is left to do is sew it up snap a few more pictures and I'll have the best looking composition notebook at my college; I hope.
