savvydreambuilder Report post Posted July 22, 2010 OK It's not my very first carving - I think it is about number 5, but it is my first flame job, so here it is for your comment, critique and assistance. I wish to improve and that is not likely to happen in a vacuum, Nicole I have since dyed it black, and done some colouring on the flames, sealed the edges and given it a leather liner, I post the colour shots when I get some, I've already found it a new home before I got the finished photos. resqman Report post Posted July 22, 2010 Your backgrounding could use some improvement. If you can pick out specific individual stamps, its not right. The background tools are supposed to add texture to contrast against the smooth parts of the carving. The background should idealy be the same depth all over, not some high and some low. Roatating your tool 90 degrees easy strike helps to keep the pattern random.

skippy Report post Posted July 23, 2010 hi mate cool strap. if i could point out somthing that i noticed ( im a novice at this too ) but one thing im very conscious about is beveling marks. where youve beleved on the second picture down its very easy to notice the individual bevel tool marks, clean them up by gently going back over with the same tool with a lot less pressure or a modeling spoon. i was thinking of making a strap for my ibanez but ive stopped playing so no point....it would only go when i sell the guitar. Hey Skippy, What do you mean no point?? there is always a point - the process!! Agreed on the bevelling - and I did pick that up myself and fixed it pre dye.
