New Pocket / Belt Holster

Recommended Posts

I made this for a small P-3AT and added the belt loop as an after thought - and since the holster and gun are so small, I figured I could get away with only one loop.

The holster is made from 7oz. leather. I added three extra layers of leather to thicken the holster and make it approximate the thickness of the gun. That way, when carrying in a pocket, the gun/holster combo will be more flat and feel like a wallet in the back pocket. I sewed it with a speedy-stitch and pre-drilled the holes on a drill press.

I finished it with 3 coats of Fiebing's Oil Dye then buffed, followed by 2 coats of Resolene that I buffed after each coat, then topped with some Minwax Paste Finishing Wax. I'm hopeful that I won't get a big black smudge on my pants when I try this one out.

Since this was my first time working with leather since highschool art class (a long time ago!) it was a good learning experience. I have to work on getting better at cutting the leather. For this one, I used an x-acto knife, so I'll likely have to invest in better tools. And I have to work on burnishing the edges, although these came out Ok. On the next one, I'm going to try giving it a coat of dye before I start sewing it together. For this one, I waited until the leather work was done before I dyed it, but I think I would have gotten better coverage if the pieces were dyed first.
