Ubuntu upgrade disaster

Recommended Posts

I will most likely be on and off the next few days, tried to upgrade to the newest ubuntu linux. Should have known better, never try the newest model of anything, wait till the bugs are scurrying away. Total system crash lost all my stuff, pics docs etc. lucky most is on cd's just have to find them. I just got the darn machine to load and stay on for more than a minute at a time.

I don't think it's the new version Jordan, that caused the problem. It's pretty much every version. They all do the same thing. Only very basic systems can take the linux upgrade well.

The standard truly recommended way to go to the latest version is a clean install.

The key is to have the install in it's own partition, and keep home, etc on their own. That way, you can do clean new installs, and not have to worry about setting up all your mail, etc.

I have Ubuntu studio on mine, and even the upgrades won't take at all. They just aren't synched together well. I'm torn about leaving Studio to upgrade to Heron, but I downloaded it last night, and will probably be forced to go to Heron, just because I have it....LOL. Can't leave well enough alone!.

If you go to the Ubuntu forums today, I'm sure there will be a ton of upgrade errors reported, and you'll probably find a fix for specific problems you are having..:

I've done about 3 upgrades with Ubuntu now. All were successful including the latest upgrade which I did this morning. I would consider my system moderately customized. I've configured apache, samba, etc to my own needs. The key is to always make sure you have an update backup. I'm sure if I had not backed everything up this morning then it wouldn't have gone so smoothly.

My problem was the computer turned itself off prior to finish messed everything lost all. Then it just wouldn't stop shutting itself off. Finally got 7.10 back on. As far as I could tell there is something that chokes the power management programs on this laptop. Once installed and then everything is ok. Just wierd I say. And yes It happens everytime I upgrade.

Toshiba Satelite P35-S605 Pentium 4 ATI Mobility Raedeon 9000 IGP 17" widescreen. I got most setup again. Never could get the photo card slots to work, proprietary. I think with age my fans are losing the ability to cool things seems to be a heat related shutdown problem mostly when I use the dvd/cdrom drive.

One laptop I had started shutting down like that, and it was a thermal issue, but not the fan. What fixed it was to remove the processor and put fresh heat sink compound on it where it mounts to the heat sink.

I will give that a try thanks. By the way is there a way to download all the photos I have posted on the board back onto my computer all at once or do I have to do them one at a time?

Go to "My Controls" at the top of the page, then click on "Manage my Attachments" under Options down the left-hand side of the page. You'll see a list of all the attachments you've uploaded.

Every few months I take take the fans out of our laptops to clean both the fan and the vents. It doesn't take long for the vents to get completely clogged up especially if you drag it everywhere like we do.

Yup, vacum is next step. The only option I get in that screen is to delete the attachments (photos). I can download them 1 at a time but was hoping there was a way to select them all and download them all at the same time.

Finally got everything taken care of. Not that I wanted to but I setup a dual boot system so I can use the photo card slots, a lot easier than plugging in and unplugging the camera even if I have to continue to use MS. On the board I found the manage attachments but it will only let me select all to delete. Since my system crashed and I lost most of my recent photos I would like to download all my photos to my hard drive but am not looking forward to doing it one at a time. Any suggestions? Thanks

Nevermind I had some time so I downloaded them that I needed. Thanks to this board I didn't lose em permanently.

Did you try the new dual boot install that you can do from windows add/remove programs?

I'm glad to hear you're up and running.

I've got an old toshiba tecra 8000 in the shop, been running ubuntu for a long time, a tad slow cause it only has 128 memory, but for email, and internet, it's fine. I upgraded this morning, knowing I'ld be sorry, and I am..Heron has much more than previous versions, and well, it's just too much for my old clunker. So either, I downgrade, or buy more memory...sheesh.

I even read the recommended memory for install, but did it anyways..guess what, they were right...lol

I love it on my desktop.

Jason was referring to the windows program Wubi, I believe. You can do an install from within windows. It actually leaves windows in complete control, even to the point of add/remove linux, but basically it's running linux in a virtual environment. That's okay for someone wanting to try out linux, but a pure install or a pure dual boot is better in my opinion, which we all know ain't worth diddly...

Yeah Wubi was what I was trying to get to, I just couldn't recall the name. It strikes me as an interesting idea. I was curious if anyone had any experience with it. I currently have dual boot setup on both my laptop and my wife's laptop. I'm not sure why we still have windows installed. Between the two of us we might use it once every three months. I'm also running Ubuntu on a web development/print/music server. I really like it.

If you need a copy of heron and can't find one on the web I might be able to find an old cd floating around here. Let me know if you need it.

I use ubuntu almost exclusively very good all around, only use win to access the photo card slots as drivers are not released by the company for open source that I can find. Also occasionally access my msn email and use media player to transfer stuff to the opal that I have that chokes on linux. Eventually I will delete all the ms junk and go free all the way again.
