Can I use a full sized 1911 for molding a holster for a Kimber Ultra Carry (3” Barrel)? I was just gonna cut the leather short two inches to make a 3" barrel. Will this work??

Yes and No... The dust cover is longer on the full sized 1911.

Agreed. You can get the basic shape, but will lack the detail molding at the dust cover. You might get pretty close by molding the trigger guard area, then withdrawing the pistol and sort of molding the end. But the length of the relief in the slide is also different (almost non-existent on the UCii) , so.....it's 50/50 at best.

Actually something that I have done in the past might work out for you. I've gone into a couple of the local Gun Stores with a cloth tape measure and asked if it was ok to get the dimensions of the pistol I was needing to pattern. With that info in hand you should be able to use the Full size for molding the controls and trigger guard, as far as the dust cover you can slip it back out fo the holster so that the front of the cover is matched up to the compact, and then pull the gun back further to line up the end of the barrel.

Not the best way, but who has the $$$$ to take up safe space on a slug...   hehehe

Another way, is to go on the internet, and find a good picture of the gun you need, then scale the image to full size, and print it out. Then you have all the details, and dimensions right there. Easier than finding a gun and measuring it. I use it a lot for making the basic layout for a holster also, when I don't have the gun handy. It is more accurate than drawing around the gun also.
