Members Lefty1972 Posted November 14, 2010 Members Report Posted November 14, 2010 I am new to leatherworking. I just purchased the professional kit from Tandy because I want to make a holster for my Ruger Alaskan. I am left handed and trying to find a holster has been near impossible, so I decided I would make one. I always wanted to do leather work, and this was as good an excuse as any to get started. Now on to the question, I have been told that a pancake design would be the best carry option for this type of handgun. That being said, does anyone know where I can get a pancake holster pattern and how difficult would it be to take the pattern and make it left-handed? Would it be just turning the pattern inside out? I have been searching the internet and not coming up with any patterns at all. If anyone has any ideas, I would be greatly appreciative. Thanks! Todd Quote
Members rickmoo Posted November 22, 2010 Members Report Posted November 22, 2010 hi, i doubt there are patterns for every gun. if i had an alaskan i could make a pattern. you would have a lot of help if you order al stohlmans volumes 1, 2, and 3 making bags and cases. springfield leather has them. good wholesale price if you have a retail license... tax#.. look at pics of pancakes on line and draw a rough outline of some. use the gun as a model. if wet forming the leather, wrap cellophane plastic around the gun. cut the bottom or back piece sort of large as in an oval shape. make sure the top piece is large enough to form around the gun . as you form the leather to the gun it starts taking shape and gives an idea how you want to cut the shape and the belt slots. it's definitely trial and " E " , but you get better as you go along. there is an art to making holsters. are you using heavy veg tan? dying , oiling etc.? it's sort of hard to explain how to make one, for me at least. Thanks for the tips rickmoo! Actually, another leatherworker on the forum was gracious enough to send me a pattern that he had already made for someone else's Ruger Alasakan. It is an Avenger style (I have never seen one until now, and I think I am going to like it). I haven't had a chance to start working on it yet, as I have been recovering from Pneumonia. Just now getting my strength back. Quote
