Trick Braid In A Dog Leash

Recommended Posts

I'm planning a dog leash. My current dog walker has tied a couple of knots in my very crappy store bought leather leash. I don't like the looks of the knots, but they do serve a function in aiding grip.

I'm thinking of putting some trick braid sections in the leash to give gripping points instead of the knots.

I'm working with some heavy latigo, (3/16"thick). I've cut the strap to 3/4" wide, so I'd be cutting a slit at 1/4" intervals. Do you see any problem with a trick braid on a strap this thick that is only 3/4" wide.

Another option would be to punch some holes down the center of the strap and do some lacing over the areas I want grips.

Any other ideas for achieving my goal of attractive gripping sections would be appreciated.

Applique the braided handles at the intervals you find necessary going the length of the leash. But being as thick as the cut is, I don't know how well that will work with plaiting a braid like that. The handles then would be apart of the actual leash and not knots. The thickness of the latigo might be a bit thick for that.

It would still offer a great attractiveness to the leash and be out of the way. More or less the handles will still look custom. But still look like they belong to the leash.

My 2 cents worth.

ive done it with 10-12 oz latigo....its not a big deal just realize that the braid wont be real tight at the top and bottom of the braided sections due to thickness....and make sue your leather is good and pliable before you start, as you will be twisting and turning it alot.....use conditioner if you have too.
