BevJones Report post Posted January 12, 2011 Hey all, I am in the market for a Landis Model 30 - 6" leather splitter. I found one that is refurbished with a new blade and has a one year warranty on defective parts. They want $895.00 Is this a fair price? I don't mind paying what something is worth as you seem to get what you pay for but I don't want to get taken to the cleaners either. I believe it probably is in the ball park but figured some of you out there would have a better idea than me. Thanks for your help... Bev
Frank Report post Posted January 12, 2011 Bev, Howdy from Milwaukee. I have family up in your area. Now on to the splitter. I paid $675 for mine plus shipping and it was in mint condition. I believe your price is approximately $100-$150 too high (my opinion). If you don't mind thinking of the $100-$150 as your insurance for the next year then you you will do fine with it. If you do not have to pay shipping then even better as it does get expensive. Now if I had to add a part or blade to mine when I bought it then it could have easily gone into your price range. Price is always relative when you look at how bad you need a piece of equipment and how soon you need it compared to the price. And also what is included...in your case, it's the warranty which most do not get. All in all, not too bad of a price compared to what new splitters bring these days. steveh Report post Posted January 12, 2011 Bring several pieces of leather with you and run it thru the splitter. select the thickness gauge make sure the that both spings adjust evenly. check the top smooth roller make sure it is clean and has no defects.check the bottom fluted feed roller that it is clean has no chips and that it is not worn out., inspect the blade to be sharp and free of nicks or chips. check the gears to lubed and that they turn freely and that there are no broken teeth.these splitters are hard to come by, I seen them go from 500 up to 1500, just depends on the condition and how bad they want to sell it. BevJones Report post Posted January 13, 2011 (edited) Well, I think I'll spring for it. Been looking for awhile and this is the only one I found from a reputable company that has a guarantee. It will cost an additional $35 to ship but he emailed me today that everything is working beautifully and the current blade works great, but he will send me a new blade anyway with it as a spare. This is a company that Landis International in Canada sent me to in New York so I'll let you know when it arrives how happy I am with it. Thanks for your help and input. I greatly appreciate it. Bev Say Frank, if your in the area and have any free time, stop in, nice to talk leather with another artist My contact info is on my website: dbjonessaddlery.com Working on my first holster and will add some pics when I'm done. Aggiebraider Report post Posted January 19, 2011 The extra blade is worth the difference you paid easily. I have seen new blades for splitters run as high as 300. Does the company you bought the splitter from have a website or contact info?

Frank Report post Posted January 21, 2011 Bev, Glad to hear that it all worked out for you. I know I love mine too. I have found a couple different places where the blades are right around $100. I plan on getting another one so I can sharpen them at my leisure while I put a fresh one on. Frank
