Lacing In A Sewing Hole

I have a Tandy Biker wallet kit, it's pre-punched for stitching. Can I use these holes and lace it instead? I have some 1/8 leather lacing.

I think the Holes will be much too small for the 1/8" lace.

After I posted that I looked, yep, WAY too small..
