Has anyone done or have tips for tooling smoke? The work in the picture is for a client that requested smoke from the gun barrels. Ive tried a few practice ideas but nothing has looked right yet. I appreciate any suggetions.

one of the Stolman books shows it if I remember right it's the pictorial carving book, not sure the cover is worn out and gone off of mine or I could tell you exactly which one. But one of them does show it.

I did smoke on one project using swivel cuts for the smoke... you could use a double sided beveler.... like CrafTools B997.....

This is a longshot but check out the web for tattooflash (designs for tattooing) and look upon japanese tattoo designs that has smoke or clouds in them (like ferocious dragon with fire and smoke). Tattoo stuff can many times be applied directly onto leather but for this I'm thinking it might need modification IF it is something worth using. Think of this option as your last option if you get stuck with it.

Good luck!

:google0dw: Thats a genious idea. I hadnt thought of that. In fact I already found something that I think will look great. Ill give it a try on a test piece and post it up later.

Thanks for the replies.

Found that book at a Tandy store today. Very simple technique. Ill try to remember to post up some shots of it later.
