Long Gaucho Knot

I´m not able to get a smart straight double or long 4 Bight 2 pass Gaucho Knot of 2 wraps with the method bruce grant describes it in his book... the method is easy but my knots allways look awfull.

so i wanna do it with a turks head foundation like a pineapple. the normal 4 bight 5 part turks head with gaucho interweave works good for me so i wanna do it with the long version as well.

i can´t find out a pattern so please help me ;-)

Sorry, can't help ya out, I struggle with the long buttons as well. I've started doing them with a multi strand braid and doubling back as shown in Bryan neuberts video and I can get a much straighter braid.

Great- thanks skyout, the pics from ron edwards helps me a lot...

is it possible to Calculate how big and broad to be taken by foundation and how wide a strip has to be to cover the foundation?

in my knots there is often space or it is to tight to complete the knot...

About Interweaves

In most cases the circumference or diameter of the knot is the critical factor and we have to adjust the parts to get the right number, for the interweave, as needed and accept the length that results. For normal type one and two pineapples you use the number of bights in the outer bight boundaries as the basis for diameter. The results of the calculations for interweaves will not come quite as close to a particular target value but they usually come close enough for government work.

In Conclusion

You can use the formulas in this form to determine the actual dimensions of a given knot with the optimum 90 degree crossing of parts to double check after the required adjustments in parts or bights from above...

Circumference = (1.4 X string width) X bights.

Diameter = (.45 X string width) x bights.

Length = (1.4 X string width) x [(parts ÷ 2) + 1].

You're more than welcome Michael. So many great people have helped me get where I am, it only feels right to pass the info on.

I might as well show you another way. LOL

Bud Brewer was a master knotter who sadly is no longer with us, but he left us many beautiful photos and tutorials at KHWW.net (he co founded it w/Brian). So by studying his work I came up with this. I tie mine on a mandrel but if you tie yours on the core this method probably won't help.

First take a look at this pic. Notice the knot is almost set but still has a little slack in it. Now look at the core. It's just a little smaller than half the length of the knot. So that's how I've been doing my core sizes. Just measure the length of the knot right before it is tightened down and go just a little smaller than half of that for the core. Works for me sometimes but not always. LOL

One thing almost all great knotters say is to keep a good knot workbook with good notes.
