Blackie Report post Posted May 19, 2011 Hi all, first time poster, and new to the leather field. Love this sight, tons of info, but I cannot seem to find the answer to this ... How do I lace or stitch a cylindrical or circular item? For instance... lets say I wanna wrap a piece of PVC pipe with leather to make a case for a fly rod. How do I lace the wrapped part to the circle part to make a solid base? And what type of stitching or lacing would anyone suggest for the length of the pipe? I first thought it would be easy to use a cross stitch , but found that was difficult. Would it look ok if I made a lip on both sides of the leather and just saddle stitched and burnished? Please help! Thanks
ramrod Report post Posted May 19, 2011 o.k.....here goes. you'll probably see this reply a lot. get al stohlman's book on how to hand stitch leather. i think it's called "the art of hand stichning leather". he has an example of making a dice cup. the tutorial is exactly like you are inquiring about. i made it myself (a long time ago). if memory serves me, i think i used a curved awl. both the base and the wrap were bevelled on a 45 degree angle so they fit together well. i made a stitching groove in both parts and wheeled my spacing at 6 stitches per inch. bear in mind that the circumferences are different on both pieces, so i'd mark only the wrap with the stitch wheel. stohlman even shows you how to transfer sewing from the bottom to the side. a good read. does that help? bkingery Report post Posted May 19, 2011 (edited) The other best books to buy is "The art of making Cases" also by Stohlman, and when I say best I mean priceless, these books will not only show you how to do the stiching but is a well of information for the newone. There is three volumes but you learn all about the stitching in the first one mostly. If you want a website try kingsmere.com it is one of the best. Hope this helps. Peace and love Bryan Edited May 19, 2011 by bkingery
