XTreme43 Report post Posted October 6, 2011 needing help in finishing my first holster.. wet formed (what i could, that is).. leather is really thick 1/4 inch. gun seems to fit pretty good, but will need to make an overstrap to keep everything in place question is.. how would i sew 3/4 inch thick ( 2 x 1/4 plus an extra piece 1/4 for trigger guard) thought about punching holes and just thonging it, but didn't know what would look better any help/criticism is appreciated
electrathon Report post Posted October 6, 2011 Drill the holes (I would use a sewing machine needle in the drill press as a drill bit) and then sew it by hand. Glue the edges togeather with contact cement. Mark your sew line (leave a little extra to trim off later n the leathers edge). Mark your spacing. Drill your holes on the marks. Hand sew. Belt sand the holster edge so that you have a smooth seam. Aaron

I use a good contact cement and glue the seam side together. Sand it to a reasonably smooth and even edge. Use a stitching gouge set at about 3/8". Run an overstitch wheel (6 SPI) to mark the stitches and use an old Osborne awl to punch the holes. Saddle stitch by hand .... usually with a contrasting color of thread. Wet form. Finish sand and burnish the edge. Here are a couple different types of long holsters I did a while ago. NOTE: The Remington replica slipped out a bit when I took the pic and I didn't notice before it was too late to redo. Reaper Report post Posted October 7, 2011 as katass said, glue it, punch it, stitch it... Looks like it is turning out nice. I've an old Bianchi for a Woodmans, the strap is actually something I will be trying out. the top leather has a slot cut in it and the strap end is pulled between the top and bottom layers and sewn in place. it is long enough to reach over the back of the frame and snaps to a short flap on the back fed through and sewn in place. I've bastardized the design for a couple of Ruger 22/45's and it worked out well. Meant to put it on put it on one I did for a 44 automag but got ahead of myself and had to skip it.
