mlapaglia Report post Posted October 16, 2011 (edited) some one is making a new version of the wooden strap cutter Tandy and others sell. Its plastic. Has a handle shaped like the Osborn draw gauge and uses several types of replacement blades including the utility knife blade. You can see it here on ebay. Looks interesting. I dont like that you cant lower the top bar to help hold the leather but the fact that it uses at least 5 different replacement blades looks good. Opinions? LNLeather Report post Posted October 16, 2011 It is hard to tell what is the space between the top bar & the lower bar... Looks like about 3/4 of an inch to me, but I can't really tell by the photos, but it Looks like a great design to me! It doesn't seem (to me) that it would make that much difference that you can't lower the bar any more than it already is. Especially since there is a top bar connected to the blade. I imagine just changing your hand position with the draw gauge in relationship to holding the leather with your other hand - that with a little practice - it would be easy to hold the leather level....... Also, I Know for a fact that these folks are Super Friendly, Helpful, and have The Absolute BEST Customer Service Possible...
Billy P Report post Posted October 16, 2011 In one of the Stolhman books, he shows how to take one of the old Strap Ease strap cutters and add a grip to make it easier to use. Billy P
LNLeather Report post Posted October 16, 2011 It is hard to tell what is the space between the top bar & the lower bar... I asked DUCKCREEKTRADERS about the New Strap Cutter Design and this is what they said....... "The distance between the two bars is 3/8". Actually the reason for the double bar is twofold. First is for safety reasons because over the years I've had several employees and myself that have been cut by the exposed top blade or if the blade stuck through to the bottom we've cut the back of our index finger on it. The other reason for the double bar is so you could use the thinner blades like we pictured and they wouldn't bend under pressure. Also they are wider to accept the full size utility knife blade. It's hard to explain everything on it about the design in a short paragraph but I should have mentioned the clearance is wide enough to accept the heaviest of saddle leather and really didn't design it to squeeze together onto the leather but to keep the adjustment to a minimum - you just loosen it, select your width, tighten it, and cut your leather." Thanks Cheryl, I appriceate the effort to talk to them. It does sounds like an interesting design. It would be nice to know if there is a set price or if its just going to be sold on ebay at auction. Safety Draw Gauge Leather Strap Cutter/Lace Cutter You can see it here on ebay I have one of these & it is great... Super design! It is made of a very tough polyurethane resin and has a metal reinforced handle plus fiberglass reinforced bars. Studio-N Report post Posted January 13, 2012 (edited) I get a lot of the Duck Creek embossing plates and would love to get one of these. I just wish they would sell them outright rather than everything by auction. Even though I've gotten some great deals when no one else bid on it - I'd love to just buy what I need when I need it. Maybe we could talk them into adding a Buy It Now option. I wish them continued success! Edited January 13, 2012 by Studio-N
