james m Report post Posted November 20, 2011 Hi there, im planning on making a canvas and leather weekend bag and i've seen a few things about welting but what is it and how do you do it? Thanks James
TwinOaks Report post Posted November 20, 2011 A welt is basically a spacer that you sew through. In the case of a fixed blade knife sheath, the absence of a welt would allow the blade to contact the stitches, possibly cutting them. With the welt in place, there's a bit of leather between the blade and the stitching. For a holster, a welt is more of a spacer than a thread protector. On bags, I don't know that you'd need one. The way to do it is to cut a strip of leather, glue it in place, and stitch through it.
Daniel G Report post Posted January 7, 2012 (edited) What is the purpose of this type of welting, the type with the leather strip between the seams. Is it to reinforce the seam or purely aesthetic? Edited January 7, 2012 by Daniel G

Treed Report post Posted January 7, 2012 Most of the time the welt is used on light materials that will take heavy abuse or where great amount of stress are placed on the seam. With fine materials the sewing is with holes spaced very close together and this weakens the material. The welt adds strength to the area and the material Bobby R

You guys are awesome! As TwinOaks stated, would gluing the welt be the best way to do this? If so what type of glue?

You would fold and glue with something like contact cement.
