Hi folks,

Just novice in tooling and so far practiced with the only veg tanned cowhides. Sheepskin looks much less expensive though and supplier convinced it is perfect for tooling/stamping.

How good veg tan 2oz sheepskin for tooling?? Can it be shaped/molded ?

Thanks in advance.

It is going to be almost impossible to tool anything that is 2oz. Needs to be 3 times thicker than that. If you are good, you will be able to tool 4 oz, but not something that you will learn on. Look for 6-8 oz to learn on.

Actually, it CAN be tooled, very carefully & not very deeply- I've done it. The problem is it doesn't want to hold the tooling if it gets wet too thoroughly (think of a genuine chamois- limp & mushy). It's also very easy to punch through when beveling. Better to use heavier leathers...
