1 3/4" to 2" oval punch

Recommended Posts

It's time for me to start thinking about getting an oval punch to make a makers stamp that can be stamped on a punched oval and stitched to the interior of my bags.

Does anyone know where I can find an oval punch about 1 3/4" to 2" wide? All I've been able to find is the round punches, pic attached.

Thanks,

ed

Ed,

None commercially available I know of. Try having a die made and have them put a handle on it. Texas Custom Dies could probably do it.

I might just have what you need. I found some LARGE oval saddle punches at the shop. These were old MIDAS punches.

I'm sending you a PM with contact info.

Thanks Bruce.

Great News, Nick. I'll call the shop tomorrow. Thanks.ed

Bruce, why wouldn't you consider making one? All you would need to do is use a piece of pipe the size you want. Have it machined down sharp on one side, then bend it closed somewhat in the vise. Then weld a handle on it. That would be cheaper for sure.

Bob,

I have done that with round punch tubes to make ovals. Heat them and flatten them. I think Ed's shop is his apartment in NYC so he might be limited on do-it-yourself equipment. Another thought I have based on your suggestion. What do you think about heating a round arch punch and flattening it to make an oval? Have to retemper the edge probably, but might work and be cost effective. I would also be curious to see a quote from a die maker too. I think I paid about $30 each for my coaster dies that are 4". If I wanted handles it was something like $45 more. Locally machinists are in short supply. About $100 for anything to walk in the door, and a month turnaround for little orders.

the arch punch idea may just work fine, depending on the size of the material on the arch. That part won't change shape. If you start with a two inch circle. It will remain flat where the welds are. It really should be bent before welding it.

Studio-N in Wichita helped me out with a 2 3/4" wide oval punch I'm really excited about. I wasn't expecting to go that large for a 2" oval stamp and margin for stitching, but I just couldn't pass up the opportunity, seeing how long I had been looking for this punch.

Out of curiosity, I called Texas Custom Dies to ask what it would cost to get a punch of the specific dimensions I'll need: $30 for the die and $20 for them to weld on a handle. I had called around several months ago and the best price I had found was around $250.

Thanks for all the help.

ED,

I guess I know who I am going to call next time I need a special punch. Thirty for a die, and twenty more for a handle. That is a bargain. Thanks for the homework.

You sure can't bit that with a stick... wow. Who can afford to make their own at that rate?

Great referral, thanks

Bob

Another nice thing is that Texas Custom Dies will make the punch to your EXACT specification. I guess you would have to send a vector file.
