I have built three saddles, 5 pack saddles and various other projects over the years. I am somewhat inexperienced in leather work so your options are respected. The next saddle I make I was thinking about using rawhide on the cantle binding and on the swell cover lip. In Al Stohlmans saddle building books he says that rawhide is strong and durable. However, I have asked other professional saddle builders and they say leather is better in both ways. What do you think? Quote
Members Aurelie Posted December 18, 2011 Members Report Posted December 18, 2011 i ve never tried rawhide on cantle, swell or horn yes Al Stholman says it's stronger but i ve been told 2 different things : for those who are roping a lot : it's of a good use on horn and swell but for other use : it s not that better than leather i guess , it depends a lot on how you're using your saddle and for what .... i just "fear" to use rawhide on those parts because it seems a bit "touchy" to work with...... saving this for later Quote
