erj1009 Report post Posted December 7, 2011 I am making headstalls and breastcollars and need to use veg-tan leather. I actually use the ruff side of the veg-tan as the front and am using the smooth backside against the horse. (Yes, I am a newbie, lol) I was wondering what I could do to make it more water resistant, I am using Olive-oil, but am wondering if something else would be better and if I can color or dye it. I am not sewing the leather I am using 12oz herman oak veg tan since I do not have a sewing machine. Help.........
Art Report post Posted December 7, 2011 After coloring the work, treat with Montana Pitchblend Paste or Pecard's. Apply to both sides if you want and let soak in thoroughly. If the leather is dry and takes up the treatment overnight, you can try a second treatment. This will give a good amount of water protection but still will allow the leather to breathe.
