Info On Lazer Engraver

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I wanted to get some information on a lazer engraver; I imagine they are pretty expensive, but what I wanted to know is are they all purpose? (do they work on leather, ceramic, other medium) or if when I get ready to buy one do I look for one that is used for leather only?

I guess what I am looking for is any information someone can give me on lazer engravers for use on leather products - I wanted to look into getting one, but have no idea how much they are, what to look for, where to go for one, etc.

thanks!!

Charlene

Charlene,

There are a number of threads in the forum concerning lasers. Just type laser into the search box to find them. Here's a thread that has a couple of ones in it already. It has some general information and the other one has links to many of the manufacturers.

Lasers - Couple of Threads

Hope that helps.

Ben

Although some lasers are different, most will engrave anything which is non reflective. For items that ARE reflective there is a special spray paint type liquid which the laser burns on to that surface to leave a black design. My Laser is on the high value side of £20k.

The software for laser engravers/cutters uses different colour lines during the design process, the different colour lines tell the laser to cut deeper, travel faster or slower etc so you can get multi depth designs in a single pass. When I use leather in mine I increase the feed rate of the laser, this eliminates some of the burn that happens on the odd ocasion.

Do you have a specific model in mind? I don't know the cost of laser engravers/cutters in the US, hopefully they are cheaper than over here.
