What Do I Have Here? 2 Hides

A customer traded these two hides as partial paymennt on a guitar strap. I think they a chrome tanned, but not sure. Both hides measure in at 5/6oz. One is 21 Sq. Ft. and the other 17 Sq. Ft.. He told me he bought them 25 years ago to make chaps. So, what do I have? What can I do with it? And any other suggestions would be great. They both are in really nice shape, with some creasing that I think would come out. I showed both the top grain and the flesh side for comparission. One of my hounds is sleeping in the background.

Firm, more like a veg tan. I think the verigated (sp) would make a really neat purse. I'm also thinking of using some og it as backing ot lining. Maybe a two sided guitar strap.

I would say it would be good for: purses, some on a quiver, holster. scabbard, sheath, gauntlets, cuffs, etc. I am a person who is just not into tooling but adding little unique piece of leather to something. I am not saying I don't totally tool somethings, just that others I like to punch it up and add something neat to it, just like the idea on the guitar strap.

That is cool leather you can even make jewellery out of it.

Thanks Jon, I have to remodel the site but where do I have the time. That site was all hard coded with frames. I am going to change it because I need to slam things up quickly and not fool around with coding.

The way I understand it, if you cut chrome tanned leather you should see a distinct difference in color in the center of the leather. It's almost a blue-ish grey. I tried tooling mine and it did take an impression but it just didn't look very nice..... almost like tooling does on overly wet leather. I even tried branding it... which I DO NOT recommend because I felt awful for days afterwards (probably poisoned myself)

Your leather does look nice. Reminds me of the "distressed" look on upholstery popular about 20-25 years ago.

This is not a leather to be tooled. However there is lots one can do with it without tooling it. It can also be used on bar stools. I would take it and tool perhaps the outside of holster and then put this in the middle to add something different.
