I like using old tools, and need a snap setter. I'm wondering if any of the oldies I see on eBay can be used with new snaps, rivets, and if anyone can share experience.

This is an example of the type I see offered at the auction site:

That's for setting tubular rivets. Also known as Rex rivets.

There are several types of snaps and different sizes of each type, the easiest thing would be to look at the Ohio Travel Bag catalog. They have the snaps and setters for most types.

As far as I can tell, a lot of different snaps require different dies. I have a hand press and dies that set Tandy line 20 snaps, but the dies don't work with line 20 DOT snaps. Are there snap setters that will work with all snaps?

Not that I've seen. There are setters that will handle most rivets but snap and grommet setters are very specific.
