Mcclellan Stirrup Leathers

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

I've a request to make some stirrup leathers for a McClellan saddle, and don't have the originals to measure from....

I want the replacements to be as close to authentic as possible, so I thought I'd ask if anyone can provide me with the original dimensions!

Respectfully,

John

Regular stirrup leathers are around 66 inches long. But they won't need to be that long for that saddle because they set lower because of hanging from the square on the tree. I'd make them as wide as the square 1 maybe 1 1/4 inches wide what ever will fit through the square.

I don't know which model McClellan you are working on. The 1861 manual gives 1.375 width, cut to 56" with an overall finish length of 53". The 1912 ordnance manual gives the leathers as being made of light harness leather of 1 3/8" wide with an overall finished length of 56.5". Holes are punched with a #12 oblong punch at 11 1/4" apart.
