New In Southside Virginia

Recommended Posts

Thanks to all you who make Leatherworker.net a learning experience. The creativity and craftsmanship here is amazing.

I am trying to get back into leather after a long time of being engaged in other things.

I did some work with little things over the years up into working with Scouts several years ago.

Like most with a different job, I had too many things with work and family that pushed it aside.

I don't know if it is in the blood but my great-grandfather apprenticed as a shoemaker here in small town Southside Virginia in post-Civil War 1870's and ran his own shop including shoe and boot making, repair, and leather goods for several decades until around 1900 when he sold it all and moved out in the country. He taught my grandfather enough (he was in his late 40's when my grandfather was born) that he was able to repair shoes, boots and tack for their area during the Depression and WWII.

I do a number of things including welding/machinist, forge work, cutlery and woodworking. I have an interest in case work and bookbinding as well.

I'm hoping I'm not too late in coming back to hand sewing again since my hands are beginning to feel the years pounding by Arthur Rightas. 8O

Welcome...I've been leatherworking for a year now. I too am starting this up after so many years of doing other types of work. My dad used to do leatherworking and I received a few of his tools when he passed. What's funny is I never had an interest back then but wished I had payed attention. I do enjoy learning and I have more to learn. This is a good place to be. Visit often!

Thanks for the welcome

It seems we have similar interests from your profile.

Gardening in Virginia has been a trial this year.

We also have 2 bob-tailed Pembroke Corgis;

Ace is a black head tri-color and he loves being a dog.

Taffy is a sable that has no idea she is a dog.

It has been so hot we had them sheared for the summer.

Oddly enough she has a little black toupe on top of her head now where her flash was.
