Members Pablo27 Posted August 5, 2012 Members Report Posted August 5, 2012 Need some input on the length of the handle for a round knife. In the book "Leathercraft Tools By Al Stohlman" he says that the handle of the round knife should fit in the heel of your hand, if not then you should shorten the handle. I have two new Osborne knifes and I don't want to cut on them if this is not the case. Anyone had to shorten the handle of a round knife, if so what is the best way to go about it? Thanks so much. Moderator bruce johnson Posted August 5, 2012 Moderator Report Posted August 5, 2012 It all depends on how you grip the knife. Some people are more comfortable palming the handle and pushing it along. It maybe gives you a little more strength behind it. If that works for you then shortening for acustom fit is alright. For me palming the handle gives me way less control. I pinch the blade with my finger and thumb and have more control, especially for curves. The handle shape and size doesn't matter as much to me. Here's a link to some videos we did for a museum display that shows how I grip and use a round knife for cutting - Tools Of The Trade . The knife clip is down the page a bit. Members compound Posted August 5, 2012 Members Report Posted August 5, 2012 (edited) It is difficult to advise. I think it is necessary to gain experience with various round knives. Personally, I prefer a knife from weaver with a short and wide handle. Although I have many other knives, the knife I use most often Martin Edited August 5, 2012 by compound Quote
