pinkingirons Report post Posted August 9, 2012 (edited) This rosette cutter sold on ebay not too long ago. I would like to make a tool similar to this. Would an arch punch be thick enough after grinding flat that teeth could be cut in using a file? (I don't own an arch punch nor have I ever seen one in person.) Another idea I had was to use a piece of galvanized steel pipe, but I am not sure if it would be hard enough or have to be hardened by heat treatment. Thanks for any input anyone might have. Woodyrock Report post Posted August 29, 2012 [ The fine toothed rosette cutter in the photograph looks (to me) like an arch punch that has been modified into a rosette cutter by hand with a triangular file. This would be time consuming, but starting with an arch punch this is rusty..low cost...you could well come up with a very workable rosette cutter. For marking out the 'teeth' you could use an old clock gear of the appropriate diameter, and number of teeth. By starting with the old arch punch, and hand filinf to shape, you would not have to worry about temper...........it would already be correct. Woody The punch pictured is a factory punch, they were quite common back in the day. You see quite a few rosettes on old saddles that have been cut with them. I don't know who made it but I would love to have a set of them. HTH Ken
