Hi Folks,

I currently have the mk 1 cutting knife!! Plus a Tandy strap cutter which, so far is ok on thicker leather but on the thinner ones it's absolutely terrible - I've wasted more leather using it!!

Does anyone have any suggestions for a good cutter, hand operated.

It seems that the older leatherworking tools must all be in a museum here in UK so if you have any suppliers I'd be grateful.

Many thanks

Dave

I use a variety of tools, from razor knife to head knife. I use a sheetrock tee square on the edges of big skins. And a carpenters framing square for smaller things. I would invest in a good self healing board, as big as you can find room for. That and a rotary knife will be your best friend.

Others will chime in, I'm sure with particular tools or methods they like and use.

Thanks for your reply.

I have the majority of the items you describe;

  • Cutting mat (self healing)
  • Clicker/razor knife
  • Rotary cutter
  • Various squares
  • 1 mtre straight edge
  • Tandy strap cutter

One thing i have noticed about the strap cutter (I know they are mass produced) but the scale doesn't even match up with the blade position, in this case if you wanted a 1" strap this cutter would cut 1 1/8",

I even considered Tandy's metal strap cutter but.........................what if the scale was wrong on that too!!

Cheers

leather very True with it.

THE LEATHER CUTTER.. made byThe Leather Works in Palo Alco Calif.

I have bought new ones that are sold by Tandy .....and they will not cut straight.

I have measured and compaired them with The Leathet Cutter. and the Tandy Cutters are not made right,

Thanx for the info Luke. My strap cutter is some 30yrs old, one from thye original maker, not Tandy. I would love to have another, but the modern one doesn't seem quite right. Its good to know about the Ebay source.

Thanks for your replies.

Luke, do you have a website for The Leather Works?

Nothing comes up on ebay at the moment.

Dave,

Their webswite is http://www.leatherworksproducts.com/. It has their contact info. I thought they had moved to Stockton a few years ago. Looks like they don't sell retail, but a phone call to them might put you in touch with a local retailer over there.

Many thanks Bruce,

no e mail details on there though, I presume they just do these cutters?

Their site is quite limited. Anyone know of any e mail address for them?

Cheers

Dave
