Buck Skin Saddle

Recommended Posts

Anyone ever used tanned deer hide for saddle building? Is it durable enough? I havent been able to find much info on differnt types of leather used in saddle making besides the standard skirting leather.

Thanks!

I do not know of any saddlemakers that use anything to craft saddles other than skirting leather. Talk to the end users of handmade saddles and I think they can explain it better than I can. Ken

I'm far from an expert of any kind, but I saw a saddle made out of buffalo hide last winter, and I think it would work. Deer hide I'm afraid would be to thin.

I've never seen deer hide in a veg tan. I'm sure it has happened, I've just never seen it. Deer is an extremely tough hide, often used in rawhide strings to lace rawhide trees with.
