Members glockanator Posted December 2, 2012 Members Report Posted December 2, 2012 Is there away to tell the difference? I got a scrap to do a holster don't know how it was tanned. Quote
electrathon Posted December 2, 2012 Report Posted December 2, 2012 Chrome is soft (uphpolstery) vegtable is hard and stiff and usually tan. Quote
Members Andrew Chee Posted December 2, 2012 Members Report Posted December 2, 2012 Then there are the combination tanned leathers. Partially chrome and partially veg (like Latigo). Except for very obvious leathers like tooling leathers and such it can be sometimes difficult to tell how a piece of leather is tanned and finished. A lot of times the leather dealer won't even know. Very confusing business. Andrew Quote
Contributing Member TwinOaks Posted December 2, 2012 Contributing Member Report Posted December 2, 2012 color and moisture absorption are probably the easiest way to tell. You'll want to cut off a little piece and make sure that it's the same color all the way through to be sure it isn't a half tan. If it passes that test, then apply water/casing solution to the piece and see if it cases. If so, you're probably dealing with veg-tan. Quote
