Andrew Chee Report post Posted December 2, 2012 Then there are the combination tanned leathers. Partially chrome and partially veg (like Latigo). Except for very obvious leathers like tooling leathers and such it can be sometimes difficult to tell how a piece of leather is tanned and finished. A lot of times the leather dealer won't even know. TwinOaks Report post Posted December 2, 2012 color and moisture absorption are probably the easiest way to tell. You'll want to cut off a little piece and make sure that it's the same color all the way through to be sure it isn't a half tan. If it passes that test, then apply water/casing solution to the piece and see if it cases. If so, you're probably dealing with veg-tan. Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
