Members jakeisme30 Posted January 17, 2013 Members Report Posted January 17, 2013 Just wondering on average how many 1 1/2 Straps I can expect out of the different cuts of leather (ie. sides, shoulder, backs, etc.) Also, I have been getting 7/8 ounce leather for belts, but have been thinking that maybe 9/10 ounce might be a little better, just wondering people opinions. Thanks for any input. Quote
Members benlilly1 Posted January 17, 2013 Members Report Posted January 17, 2013 The best leather for belts is the back. Which is about half of a hide. The part closest to the backbone is firmer and tighter grain. They need to be cut lengthwise of the hide. Purchasing backs instead of a whole side is more economical if you can get it. 9-10oz. is more for work belts. 8-9oz. works best for carving. Quote
