jakeisme30 Report post Posted January 17, 2013 Just wondering on average how many 1 1/2 Straps I can expect out of the different cuts of leather (ie. sides, shoulder, backs, etc.) Also, I have been getting 7/8 ounce leather for belts, but have been thinking that maybe 9/10 ounce might be a little better, just wondering people opinions. Thanks for any input.
benlilly1 Report post Posted January 17, 2013 The best leather for belts is the back. Which is about half of a hide. The part closest to the backbone is firmer and tighter grain. They need to be cut lengthwise of the hide. Purchasing backs instead of a whole side is more economical if you can get it. 9-10oz. is more for work belts. 8-9oz. works best for carving.
